A movie that should be required viewing for all teens...

Some of you may remember an incident that I spoke of a couple of weeks back wherein a young teen titleholder was being bullied on the Voy boards by the mother of a competitor.  This made me highly incensed, so much so that I felt the absolute need to blog about it.  Today I happened upon a movie on the ABC Family Channel entitled "Cyberbully".  The movie is about a young lady in high school who was being so sullied that she felt the need to attempt suicide.  What saddens me is that too many of these young people don't just attempt to take their own lives but they succeed.  Why?  This couldn't be more pointless!  A scene that just played stated something I hadn't thought of.  When we were young of course there were many that "bullied" us.  I was the recipient of quite a bit of hurtful words and actions all based upon untrue rumor(s).  I was lucky though.  I have a Mom that put it into perspective for me and helped me through it when I came home and spoke about it all with her. The difference today is that these young people cannot escape the bullies.  They follow them everywhere they go via the internet and mass communication.  When we were young the untruths had to make it from person to person and we could step away from hearing it.  These kids are followed not only on their computers but via text as well.  I just learned that the police can't even do anything about harassment via the internet/text, even in its' most egregious form.  An actual physical threat must be made before they are allowed to step in at all.  Even then their hands are reasonably well tied.  This MUST be stopped!  Legislation MUST be put in place to not only deter but end this!  Kids lives are being ended and negatively altered forever.  Joyce Meyer posted this yesterday on Facebook, "Words can hurt or words can heal. How are you using your words today?"  This VERY basic statement should be held close to our hearts and more importantly our tongues every moment of every day.  Gahndi said "Be the change you wish to see in the World."  Yes, we've all heard this many times, but have you REALLY heard it?  Do you enact it?  Are you part of the cure or part of the problem?  Look very deeply into your self.  Negativity in any form only breeds more negativity.  Boycott the Voy boards.  Stand up for someone that you see being bullied.  Report bullying to a higher authority.  Only by taking a proactive stand can we end this very real and horrifying problem!  I wish for you a very blessed day!

  1. You went directly to the heart of the matter! Extremely well written. What you conveyed, Deborah, is sadly a reality in our modern world, though as you strongly spoke and encouraged, it is up to each and every one of us to step forward, speak up & PROTECT our Youth!! Your words & actions are making a positive difference!
